Just before the earth stopped us è un disco che raccoglie cinque tracce registrate da Armenia ad Aprile 2020. La registrazione della performance in questione avviene presso un museo di Arte Orientale, per la precisione il Chiossone di Genova.
La performance si ispira all'opera di Nakahara, illustratore giapponese del ventesimo secolo, precursore di quello stile pittorico conosciuto come "grandi occhi" che sfociò poi nel manga. Fisionomie esili e occhi ingigantiti che facevano riferimento alla popolazione femminile del secondo dopoguerra nipponico.
La musica di Armenia accompagna un'altra performance, quella dell'artista visiva Angela Mambelli alias Dollworld, creatrice di mondi in miniatura: il tono musicale varia di continuo, lungo tutta la durata del disco e questa scelta comporta un continuo modificarsi del mood, delle sensazioni che il suo ascolto causa nell'ascoltatore. Si passa da un ritmo lento, puramente introspettivo a uno più serrato, che, senza mai spingersi oltre, aumenta il vigore delle tracce.
La voce utilizzata per Beauty (Okinawa) trasporta un fortissimo potere ipnotico e rende il brano un viaggio unico nel suo genere. Il suono della lingua giapponese contribuisce in maniera decisiva a scolpire l'anima del disco, pieno di riferimenti impliciti o espliciti al paese del sol levante e a tutto ciò che l'idea del Giappone fa scaturire nei nostri cuori occidentali.
Armenia contribuisce a fare di questa performance un evento memorabile, con tracce davvero valide dal grande potere evocativo; attivo dai primi anni '80 si dimostra un artista versatile e rende questa registrazione estrapolabile dal contesto performance e in grado di stare in piedi da sola, per un'esperienza di ascolto più unica che rara.”

Just before the earth stopped us is a disc that collects five tracks recorded by Armenia in April 2020. The recording of the performance in question takes place at a museum of Oriental Art, to be precise the Chiossone of Genoa.
The performance is inspired by the work of Nakahara, Japanese illustrator of the twentieth century, precursor of that pictorial style known as "big eyes" which then resulted in the manga. Slender physiognomies and magnified eyes that referred to the female population of the second post-war period of Japan.
Armenia's music accompanies another performance, that of the visual artist Angela Mambelli aka Dollworld, creator of miniature worlds: the musical tone changes continuously, throughout the duration of the disc and this choice involves a continuous change of mood and feelings it causes in the listener. We pass from a slow, purely introspective rhythm to a tighter one that, without ever going further, increases the strength of the tracks.
The voice used for Beauty (Okinawa) carries a very strong hypnotic power and makes the song a unique journey. The sound of the Japanese language contributes decisively to sculpting the soul of the disc, full of implicit or explicit references to the country of the rising sun and to all that the idea of Japan brings forth in our western hearts.
Armenia contributes to making this performance a memorable event, with truly valid traces of great evocative power; active since the early 80s, he proves to be a versatile artist and makes this recording extrapolable from the performance context and able to stand on his own, for a more unique than rare listening experience.”

Sento che questa pièce smaschera un quotidiano che si trova dentro e\o fuori di noi e che ci ostiniamo a non vedere, perché è più facile accoglierlo e perpetuarlo per tutta una vita in quanto comodo. Ci si sta bene, è un posto sicuro; piuttosto che tentare di pensare, anche solo per un attimo, di rimettere in discussione tutto, di opporsi, di uscire e scoprire qualcosa di nuovo o che c'era ma non si vedeva; quindi di progredire (perché questo è davvero scomodo, incerto, con una quota di pericolosità).
La musica che hai composto non potrebbe essere diversa: perfettamente evoca la frequenza giusta da seguire che si trova in ognuno di noi. A chi non la possiede il segnale arriva, irrompe e apre la strada. Giorgia e Mattia sono molto eleganti; ci conducono in questo percorso e, con generosità, ci donano un aspetto della loro anima molto intimo.

I feel that this piece unmasks the everyday life that is inside and\or outside of us and that we persist in not seeing, because it's easier to welcome it and perpetuate it for a whole life as it's comfortable. It feels good, it's a safe place; rather than trying to think, even for a moment, of questioning everything, of opposing it, of going out and discovering something new or that was there but not seen; therefore to progress (because this is really not comfortable, uncertain, rather dangerous).
The music you composed could not be different: it perfectly evokes the right frequency to follow that is within each of us. To those who do not have it, the signal arrives, breaks in and opens the way. Giorgia and Mattia are very elegant; they lead us along this path and generously give us an aspect of their very intimate soul.
Music (hypnotic contamination!), the voices of the second movement (Sintassi Della Lingua Madre) are perfect for making the transition. The path is not easy but we like it, because that "dogma" is our friend.
In Divide Et Impera the dogma seems to open and explain itself to us; the effects on the voices are intended, also in this case, as a tool and frequency and this is the key; it's so for all movements, as in the first one which is both entry and exit at the same time, Dogma!”

The hit by Armenia "Like A Dervish" might be still in your head, forever fresh like a just caught fish of special electro psychedelic pop it simply never seems to wiggle its recognizable happy tail. But hey! The producer just dropped an entire studio album and trust me this pleasant tune is included (twice!) so this might be enough reason to catch it & enjoy. Let me walk you through it cause that's what we normally do around here...
At first I felt like being beamed back to the time in which the boys of Kraftwerk had been kings of the world, a period in which robots and their sounds still spoke to the imagination & modern music was more old school than the nowadays. This "we are the enemies" is like the "we are the robots" of the future, taking the best parts of the retro perspectives, cleaned it all up and brought it back to life again!
For the progressional track named "Like a dervish" I had already penned up a whole essay about, fill in the search option and you will find it. Let me tell you in a very short version of a review: this stuff is good! But after this it's time for "impressions", a totally different kind of tune, less concrete and to the point, more shimmering like some kind of robotic dinosaur that needed a soundtrack to place its flat paws along. Step by step this electric track walks and when it's done it's time for a bunch of numbers. These numbers are getting repeated so we can try to count along & enjoy them with some slushy lasers, some construction work on the backdrop and a bass. It's not like the pocket calculator song of Kraftwerk "catchy" but more like a minimal countdown that might be more of a filler than a killer. Nonetheless I found it fairly enjoyable.
As expected after a count down the real shit will happen, and with this track named "Balance" this pretty much hit that euphoric highlight in its agenda. It comes with some kind of thematic themed melody, it comes with the sound of wind and a industrial sounding science fictional rhythm and a robotic female voice to keep the atmospheres in higher atmospheres. It's utterly mysterious, like a startrek series in which the Borg had taken over the main leading roles of the enterprise and its crew members & all is a bit more dark & robotic. Everything is getting reassembled, the whole show gets a make over and it feels much more creepy than comical.
A more upbeat moment on the album comes with the arrival of "3days", one in which a electric rhythm gives reason for shiny boots to hop on and off the floor and robot impersonators could do their stiff dance moves. More special and magically interesting is all that is happening within the "engage me (ballet)" track. It's a combo of a robo-bounce hitting a slow bong with classical cultural references. Not something that seem to come from outer space or a robotic world but something more Armenian, with an old school violin and even a moan-singing man that seems to be completely into some kind of trance... yep, pretty damn interesting!
It comes as a real delight when the song with its cultural melody gets a full on electronic return, with bubbling baselines and a fine electropop groove that is so cool that even the moan-singer seems to be at home in!
The album ends with the (as promised!) recognizable hit, loved by yours truly and probably by others like yourself. Of course it's "Like a dervish" taking the listener for the last time to a strange outer space in a experimental psychedelic pop way... it's a blessing to end upon this high melodic notes, there is no doubt that even though the fair amount of other tracks on this album; it's still the best tune of Armenia!

L'hit di Armenia "Like A Dervish" potrebbe essere ancora nella vostra testa, per sempre fresca come un pesce appena pescato di speciale electro pop psichedelico che semplicemente sembra non muovere mai la sua coda felice e riconoscibile. Ma hey! Il produttore ha appena rilasciato un intero album di studio e, credetemi, questa piacevole melodia è inclusa (due volte!), quindi questo potrebbe essere una ragione sufficiente per prenderlo & goderselo. Permettetemi di accompagnarvi al suo interno perché questo è quello che normalmente facciamo qui...
All'inizio mi è sembrato di essere tornato al tempo in cui i ragazzi dei Kraftwerk erano stati re del mondo, un periodo in cui i robot e i loro suoni ancora parlavano all'immaginazione e la musica moderna era più vecchia scuola rispetto a oggi. Questa "we are the enemies" è come "we are the robots" del futuro, prese le parti migliori delle prospettive retrò, ripulito il tutto e portato a nuova vita!
Riguardo la traccia progressiva chiamata "Like a dervish" avevo già scritto un intero saggio, compilate il form di ricerca e lo troverete. Lasciate che vi dica quale versione molto breve di una recensione: questa roba è buona! Ma dopo questa è il momento di "impressions", un tipo completamente diverso di traccia, meno concreta e dritta al punto, più luccicante, come una specie di dinosauro robotico che aveva bisogno di una colonna sonora per allungare giù piatte le zampe. Passo dopo passo questa traccia elettrica cammina e quando si conclude è il momento di un gruppo di numeri. Questi numeri vengono ripetuti cosicché possiamo provare a contare all'unisono e goderceli con alcuni laser fangosi, lavori di costruzione sullo sfondo e un basso. Non è "accattivante" come la canzone della calcolatrice tascabile dei Kraftwerk, è più un conto alla rovescia minimo, più un riempitivo che un killer. Nonostante ciò l'ho trovato abbastanza piacevole.
Come previsto dopo un conto alla rovescia arriva la vera e propria merda con questa traccia chiamata "Balance", questo hit piuttosto bello che evidenzia un'intensa eccitazione nel suo procedere. Arriva con una sorta di tema melodico, accompagnato dal suono del vento e da un ritmo industriale da fantascienza e da una voce robotica femminile che mantiene il clima in atmosfere superiori. È assolutamente misterioso, come una serie di startrek in cui i Borg abbiano rilevato i ruoli principali dell'enterprise e i suoi membri dell'equipaggio e ogni cosa diventa un po’ più oscura e robotica. Tutto viene assemblato nuovamente, l'intero spettacolo arriva a una trasformazione completa e trasmette una sensazione molto più di raccapriccio che di divertimento.
Un momento maggiormente in levare dell'album arriva con l'ingresso di "3days", dove un ritmo elettrico fornisce una ragione a lucidi stivali per saltare su e giù sul pavimento e dove imitatori di robot potrebbero eseguire i loro rigidi passi di danza. Più speciale e magicamente interessante è tutto ciò che accade nella traccia "engage me (ballet)". Questa mette insieme lo slancio robotico di un suono basso che vibra lentamente e riferimenti culturali classici. Qualcosa che non sembra provenire dallo spazio o da un mondo robotico ma qualcosa di più armeno, con un vecchio violino scolastico e persino un uomo che canta gemendo e che sembra essere completamente in una specie di trance... beh, molto dannatamente interessante!
Diventa una vera delizia quando la canzone con la sua melodia di un'altra cultura aggancia un pieno ritorno dell'elettronica, con linee di base bubbling e un bel groove elettropop che è così cool che anche il cantante che geme sembra essere a casa propria!
L'album si chiude con il riconoscibile hit (come promesso!), amato dal sottoscritto e probabilmente da altri tra di voi. Naturalmente è "Like a dervish" che conduce per l'ultima volta l'ascoltatore a uno strano spazio esterno attraverso un pop psichedelico sperimentale... è una benedizione terminare su queste alte note melodiche, non c'è dubbio, nonostante l'equo ammontare delle altre tracce di questo album; è ancora il miglior pezzo di Armenia!

Dervishes, pay attention! As this "like a Dervish" tune is probably high up your alley! A electronic track that feels like it would suit mechanic dancers and proud Dervishes at the same time, clearly being a self celebrating Dervish tune in which a Dervish could truly identify with.
With a steady electric beat and a organic sounding session of orgasmic synthesizer sounds it truly sets the blitz. Together with a peculiar futuristic voice that follows on to form a stretched out alien pop structure, this "dervish" tune goes in like a futuristic dance track that moves up and down with robotic precision.
It might be difficult to rightfully describe this tune, but let's say that this track is like a Dervish. "The Dervish focus is on the universal values of love and service, deserting the illusions of ego to reach God." A thing that oddly gets there next-level style within this anthem.

Dervisci, fate attenzione! Dato che questo motivo "like a Dervish" probabilmente fa proprio al caso vostro! Una traccia elettronica che appare poter essere adatta allo stesso tempo a danzatori meccanici e a fieri Dervisci, essendo chiaramente un pezzo che autocelebra i Dervisci e con cui un Derviscio potrebbe sinceramente identificarsi.
Con un battito elettrico costante e un insieme compatto di suoni di sintetizzatore da orgasmo assesta un vero attacco. Accoppiata a una voce futuristica peculiare che persevera nel formare una struttura alien pop diluita, questa melodia "dervish" penetra come una traccia di danza futuristica che si muove su e giù con precisione robotica.
Potrebbe essere difficile descrivere con esattezza questo pezzo, ma diciamo che questa traccia è come un Derviscio. "Il focus del Derviscio è sui valori universali di amore e servizio, abbandonando le illusioni dell'io per arrivare a Dio". E così sarà con We are the enemies, il brano che contiene anche piccoli campioni audio della voce recitante del fondatore del movimento futurista Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. Una formula già collaudata con Slave - con la voce di J. F. Kennedy - e Facing the abyss, contenente il discorso di Bush all'indomani dell'11 settembre. RETROFUTURI still protagonist at the Wolfsoniana of Nervi. The festival of electronic music and visuals organized by Duplex Ride sees Armenia enter the field this Saturday. His new album, We are still machines, is just a step from seeing the light and it's therefore the time to give the public a preview. And so it will be with We are the enemies, the piece which also contains small audio samples of the reciting voice of the founder of Futurism, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. A formula already been tested with Slave - with the voice of John F. Kennedy - and Facing the abyss containing Bush's speech in the aftermath of September 11. In his set Armenia will connect an Orwellian future to the theme of awareness and man's mechanical nature. Attivo sul fronte della sperimentazione elettronica fin dagli inizi degli anni '80 con la formazione degli Elettra, prima, e con i Distesa, poi, Armenia raggiunge il suo nirvana creativo solo nella sua dimensione solista, dagli anni '90 in poi, grazie ad una serie di progetti che, senza snaturare il pionerismo degli esordi, si distinguono per maggiore umoralità e aperture cromatiche.
"A new beginning" del 2011 è l'ultimo della serie ed evidentemente per lo stesso Antonio Armenia rappresenta tuttora anche il più completo e importante, tanto da meritarsi una nuova e nobilitante collocazione all'interno di un album dal vivo registrato a Genova in occasione del suo primo live set del 2015. "Reboot", infatti, recupera gran parte dei brani di quel disco strumentale - più tre inediti di recente produzione - vestendoli di nuovi arrangiamenti e di una ritrovata emotività che, giocoforza, solo la presenza fisica di un pubblico amico avrebbe potuto far deflagrare.
I dieci brani in scaletta si sviluppano lungo un riconoscibile neurone kraut-cosmico di scuola teutonica, percepibile fin dall'opener "Under sky", o assolutamente dominante come nella fluttuante "Secret heart", sul quale via via il compositore ligure innesta filamenti ambient, industrial, retro-futuristici ("You are the task") o velatamente danzerecci in chiave future-pop ("Slave"). Alle sfumature dark-ambientali di "Lead me to lines", agli striscianti sentori space-orientaleggianti di "Saving energy" e alla piacevole schizofrenia di "Quantum dot" (una sorta di Herbie Hancock transistorizzato in sistematico cortocircuito) l'onere di alleggerire provvidenzialmente una latente ripetitività di schemi che - sommata alla relativa brevità delle composizioni, che talvolta sembra castrare possibili sviluppi, anche concettuali - a lungo andare avrebbe rischiato di annacquare il livello generale di pathos. Pathos, comunque, che difficilmente verrà meno ogni qual volta il materiale di "Reboot" potrà godere della complicità di uno scenografico contraltare visivo.”

On the front of the electronic experimentation since the early '80s first with the band Elettra and then with Distesa, Armenia reaches his creative nirvana only in his soloist dimension, from the 90s onwards, thanks to a number of projects which, without altering the pioneering spirit of the early years, are characterized by enhanced humoral transitions and chromatic openings.
"A new beginning" of 2011 is the last in the series and apparently is also still the most comprehensive and important to Antonio Armenia, earning a new and ennobling location inside a live album recorded in Genoa during his first live set in 2015. "Reboot", in fact, recovers most of the music on that instrumental record - plus three recent unpublished tracks - giving them new arrangements and a renewed emotionality that, inevitably, only the physical presence of a friendly audience could make it explode.
The ten tracks in the lineup are developed along a recognizable neuronal cosmic kraut of Teutonic school, starting from the opener "Under sky" or absolutely dominant as in the floating "Secret heart", where the Ligurian composer gradually inserts ambient, industrial, retro-futuristic ("You are the task") or subtly future-pop danceable style filaments ("Slave"). The burden to lighten providentially a latent repetition of patterns which - plus the relative brevity of the compositions that sometimes seems to castrate possible developments, even conceptual - in the long run would have risked to water down the overall level of pathos, is the task of the dark-ambient nuances of "Lead me to lines", of the space-oriental creeping aromas of "Saving energy" and of the pleasant schizophrenia of "Quantum dot" (a kind of transistorized Herbie Hancock in systematic short-circuit). Pathos, however, which is unlikely to disappear whenever the material of "Reboot" will enjoy the complicity of a spectacular visual counterpart.”
